Mode of Action
Nonoxynol 9 kills sperm by destroying its cell wall, thus preventing the fertilization of the egg during sexual intercourse. In addition, the active ingredient also inactivates bacteria (such as chlamydia ), fungi (such as yeasts) or the herpes simplex virus .
This special mode of action is not used therapeutically.
These side effects may not occur as every person reacts differently to medication. Please also note that the type and frequency of adverse reactions may vary depending on the drug formulation (eg tablet, syringe, ointment).
Rare side effects:
feeling warm, local irritations such as burning or itching (also possible with the sexual partner).
Special Side effects:
The active ingredient can – especially when used regularly – irritate and injure the vaginal mucosa. This increases the risk of becoming infected with the HIV virus during intercourse. The use must be stopped if the user or her partner shows signs of irritation to the vagina or penis.
