Scientific Results

Who else, apart from an African researcher, might be interested in studying this fruit? The African mango aroused the interest of a whole team of scientists who conducted two successive studies.


In their first study in 2005, Dr. Ngondi and his team evaluated the effect of African Mango fruit extracts on obesity and lipid levels in the blood.

The study involved 40 Cameroonian subjects with a BMI greater than 25 and an average age of 42, who were randomly divided into two distinct groups.

A first treatment group consisting of 28 individuals received a dose of 3 x 350 mg extracts of African Mango, 3 times daily and one hour before meals (for a total exceeding 3.15 g per day).

The control group of 12 remaining individuals, have received the same dose of pills, but this time it is a placebo containing sound. All participants followed a similar diet.

The treatment lasted 4 weeks. The final results showed that, on average, people in the treatment group lost almost 5% of their respective weight.

The people in the control group lost 1.3% of their weight; a difference of the order of 3.7%. This is a significant difference, but not conclusive.

This study showed a significant reduction in the overall blood level of cholesterol, triglycerides and bad cholesterol (LDL). At the same time, the blood concentration of the good cholesterol (HDL) in the group taking African Mango has increased significantly. Basically, researchers have noticed a decrease in the level of carbohydrates in the blood.


In 2009, Dr. Ngondi and his colleges of the University of Yaounde in Cameroon repeated their study with 102 volunteers.

This sample included people with normal weight and overweight or obese people.  The objective was to test the effect of IGOB131, an extract of the Irvingia Gabonensis plant .

Once again, the volunteers were divided into a treatment group and a control group.  Each subject following his group, received 150mg of IGOB131 for the first and placebo for the second.

The conditions for taking the substance are the same for both groups, 30-60 minutes before the meal or dinner and this during a period that spans 10 weeks.

The researchers found similar results to the 2005 study. The treatment group experienced a small loss of weight and improved blood lipid levels.

The authors of the study state that African Mango extract IGOB131 could be a useful way to fight the global epidemic of obesity, hyperlipemia and related diseases.
